We’re lucky in the UK, not only do we have one of the safest driving records in Europe we also have areas of outstanding natural beauty that are easily accessible by car.
Some of the roads in Great Britain are a bit boring but the highways and byways in this latest blog from Mini Tuition are worth a special journey if you get the chance.
Cat and Fiddle – The peak district is the home to the A54 – A537 Buxton to Macclesfield road aptly named the ‘Cat and Fiddle’ after the pub you’ll find at its peak. This sweeping road is full of twists and turns, it’s been named as one of the most dangerous sections of road in the UK, however, the views are amazing thanks to the backdrop of the stunning Peak District National Park. Great for passengers, they’ll take full advantage of the view. You might want to keep your eyes on the road though, this route is very popular with motorbike riders.
Penrith to Alston and Haydon – The AA has named this route one of ‘the greatest drives in Great Britain’ so who are we to argue? Leave the M6 at junction 40 take the A686 and pass through the charming villages of Langwathby and Melmerby along the way. You’ll eventually reach Hartside Summit before dropping down to the market town of Alston and eventually make your way to Haydon Bridge. As you can imagine the scenery is spectacular as long as you choose a clear day.
Black Mountain Pass – Over to Wales this time for a trip along the A4069. Take in the majestic sight of the Brecon Beacons as you travel from Llandovery to Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen avoiding stray sheep and countless hairpin bends en route. It’s a challenging journey but the scenery you pass through on the way makes it all worthwhile.
The Cheddar Gorge – Somerset is the destination for this road trip, enjoy the delights of the West Country as you travel from Cheddar on the B3135 towards Ashwick through stunning countryside. The road is twisty and tight in sections, you have to keep your wits about you but it’s worth it due to the fabulous scenery you pass along the way.
Get a bit of driving experience under your belt and any of these routes would provide a memorable journey.
